 TOP HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR COUGHS

Aconite 30c- Sudden onset often after exposure to cold air. Dry croupy cough with runny nose and sneezing. Irritation of respiratory tract, hoarseness/dryness of throat. Worse: cold dry winds, talking and deep breathing. Better: lying on back. 

Ant Tart 30c - Noisy, rattling, loose cough as if chest full of mucus. Young children or elderly with cough too weak to expel the mucus. Worse: night, especially from 10 pm until after midnight, lying flat, eating. Better sitting up and after expectoration 

Bryonia 30c - Dry hacking cough in the evening and night without sputum. Spasmodic cough shaking the whole body, pain in the head an abdomen from coughing, better for holding the painful part. Dryness of all air passages with thirst. Worse: movement, deep breathing, lying in bed. Better: fresh air and for pressure of painful part. 

Causticum 30c - Cough with raw, sore feeling in chest. Hollow, hard, dry cough from tickling in throat pit. Expectoration not easy to cough up and slips back down the throat. Worse: lying down, talking and bending head forward. Better: cold drinks 

Coccus Cacti 30c - Paroxysmal, hard, short hacking cough ending in copious thick, ropes of mucus. Worse: 6-7 am or after 11.00 pm, becoming heated, warm rooms. Better: cold, open air, cold drinks. 

Drosera 30c - Spasmodic, dry irritating coughs like whooping cough. Barking cough which is dry in the evening and loose in the morning. Sputum is yellow/green, bitter or offensive, bloody or pus like. Retching after spasmodic cough. Worse: after midnight, lying down, singing, laughing and drinking. Better: holding chest.

Hepar Sulph 30c - Productive cough with thick, yellow mucus. Also dry, croupy cough. Worse: slightest drafts, uncovering, cold dry air Better: warmth, from expectoration. 

Ipecacuanha 30c - Almost always totally dry cough which comes in paroxysms causing choking, gagging or vomiting. Worse: night, deep inspiration especially in morning while lying in bed, warm room. Better: after expectoration and cold drinks. A good children's cough remedy if the symptoms fit. 

Phosphorous 30c - Cough may be dry or loose, (useful in the early stages of bronchitis/pneumonia) Every cold descends to the chest. Burning in the chest with raw larynx and feeling of tightness. Scratchy sensation in the throat, tickling cough. Worse: change from warm air to cold air, talking, laughing. Better: heat, sleep and lying on right side 

Pulsatilla 30c - Catarrhal cough with copious yellow/green lumpy mucus. Dry cough at night, loose in the morning. Worse: warm stuffy rooms, lying down, becoming warm in bed. Better: fresh air, gentle walking, sitting up in bed.

Rumex 30c - Main remedy for tickling irritated coughs. Incessant, violent, tickling cough with scant expectoration. Intense tickling in the larynx and trachea , worse cold air. Covers mouth when goes out in the cold air. Teasing cough preventing sleep. Worse: slightest inspiration of cold air, going from warm room to cold, talking. Better: warm air 

Spongia 30c - Barking, dry croupy cough with wheezing and rasping. Great dryness of all air passages. Scanty expectoration tasting salty, looser in the morning but no mucous rattle in the chest. Cough sounds like a saw being driven through a pine board. Sensation as if had to breath through a dry sponge. Worse: warm room, talking before midnight. Better: swallowing, especially warm drinks, sitting up and bending forward.

TOP HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR SORE THROATS

Aconite 30c - Sudden onset of sore throat after exposure to cold or cold dry winds. High fever, flushed face with restlessness or anxiety. Pharynx and tonsils bright red without pus, burning and mildly swollen. Painful swallowing though intensely thirsty for cold drinks. 

Apis 30c - Redness and swelling of mucous membranes. Dirty grey covering of throat with or without ulcers on tonsils. Swelling of uvula. Stinging or stitching pains. Worse: warmth and warm drinks. Better: cold applications

Belladonna 30c - No 1 remedy for sore throats with sudden onset. Bright red, inflamed angry looking throat. Swollen glands. Dry burning heat, flushed face with fever. Burning with pain extending to right ear when swallowing. Neck tender to touch. Worse: swallowing, talking, cold air, touch. Better: sitting up in bed.

Hepar Sulph 30c - Pain spreading to ear when not swallowing. Swollen ulcerated tonsils with offensive breath and much saliva. Splinter like pains or, sore, raw and burning. Worse: cold air and drinks. Better: warmth of bed and wrapping up head and throat. 

Lachesis 30c - Sore throat starts on LEFT side. Dry, intensely swollen with a sensation of a lump in the throat. Throat dusky, purplish dry with a constant desire to swallow. Worse: left side, pressure and constriction. Better: swallowing solids. 

Lycopodium 30c - Sore throat starts on RIGHT side and extends to the left. Throat membrane is grey/white with ulcers. Dryness without thirst. Burning sore , rawness. Worse: swallowing, in the afternoon from 4-8. Better: warm drinks and food. 

Merc Viv 30c - Ulcerated throat, tonsillitis. Offensive breath with profuse saliva especially at night. Swollen glands. May have bitter metallic taste in mouth. Sore, raw burning pains or splinter like pains that shoot into ear or neck on swallowing. Worse: night, swallowing, heat or cold. Better: moderate temperature. 

Nitric Acid 30c - Horrible pain, often stitching or Òlike a fish boneÓ in the throat. Dark red tonsils and pharynx with ulceration. Pain may extend to ears on swallowing. Worse: cold air, swallowing must lower head to swallow. 

Phytolacca 30c - Throat is dark red, dry and rough. May have white or grey spots on sides of throat. Cannot swallow anything hot. Very painful swollen glands. Pain shoots in both ears on swallowing and pain felt at base of tongue when sticking it out of mouth. Worse: hot drinks and hot food. Better: cold drinks

The Baby Herb – Acorus Calamus/Vasambu/Bach-வசம்புவின் மருத்துவ குணங்கள்!!!

வசம்புவின் மருத்துவ குணங்கள்:-     

How to use this herb:

Just burn it over a flame/lamp and rub this charred herb on a stone with some water or breastmilk. This is the basic paste for all ailments.

For Colic Infants:

Just take a little paste on your finger tip and rub it on the baby’s tongue every morning. Or try elcarim drops which contains this herb. Reviewed here.

For Loose motions

Mix this paste with honey and again rub on the baby or kids’s toungue

For Vomitting

Mix this paste with milk or breastmilk and place some on the tongue.

Natural Insecticide:

Tie this herb to a string and place around the baby’s neck or waist to ward off insects.

Homemade Kajal

Many of us Indians put a black tikka/bindi on the baby’s forehead and legs as it is believed to protect the baby from evil eye. You can apply this herb paste on the forehead instead of store bought kajal.

Other uses: Used to treat Speech disorders and known to build the child’s intellect.

Availability: You can find it in Ayurveda stores or Kotakkal stores.

The herb has to be burned over a flame. If you have more just put some in your own cupboards to keep insects away.

நாட்பட்ட கீல்வாத நோய்களுக்கு வசம்பை காசிக் கட்டியுடன் சேர்த்து நீர் விட்டு அரைத்து பற்றிட்டு வர குணமாகும்.

வாய் குமட்டலையும், வாந்தியையும் உண்டாக்க வசம்பை நன்கு பொடி செய்து ஒரு கிராம் அளவு உட்கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

வசம்பை வறுத்துப் பொடித்துக் கால் கிராம் தேனில் கொடுத்து வர சளி, வாயு ஆகியவற்றூ அகற்றுப் பசியை மிகுக்கும்.

வசம்பைச் சுட்டுச் சாம்பலாக்கி தேனில் குழைத்து நாவில் தடவ வாந்தி தீரும்.

வசம்பைக் கருக்கிப் பொடித்து 100 மில்லி கிராம் அளவாகத் தாய் பாலில் கலக்கி சிறு குழந்தைகளுக்குக் கொடுக்க வயிற்றுப் பொருமல், வயிற்றுப் போக்கு, வயிற்றுவலி ஆகியவை தீரும்.

வசம்புத் துண்டை வாயிலிட்டுச் சுவைக்க, உமிழ்நீர் அதிகம் சுரக்கும். தொண்டைக் கம்மல் இருமலை அகற்றும்.

குழந்தைகளுக்கு உண்டாகும் சுரம், இருமல், வயிற்றுவலி இவை குணமாக வசம்புடன் அதிமதுரம் சேர்த்து கசாயமிட்டு காலை, மாலை இரண்டு வேளையும் கொடுக்கக் குணமாகும்.

வசம்பை தூள் செய்து தேனுடன் கலந்து திக்குவாய் உடையவர்கள் தினந்தோறும் காலையில் நாவில் தடவி வர பேச்சு திருந்தும்.

பசியைத் தூண்டவும், அஜீரணத்தைப் போக்கி வயிற்றில் சேர்ந்த வாயுவை நீக்கவும் வசம்பு ஒரு பங்கும் பத்து பங்கு வெந்நீரும் சேர்த்து ஊற வைத்து வடிகட்டி பதினைந்து மி.லி. முதல் முப்பது மி.லி. வீதம் அருந்தி வர வேண்டும். குழந்தைகளுக்கு உண்டான கழிச்சலுக்கும், முறைக் காச்சலுக்கும் இதனை கொடுக்கலாம்.

வயிறில் சேர்ந்த வாயுவை அகற்ற வசம்பை அடுப்பில் வைத்து சுட்டுக் கரியாக்கி, அதனை தேங்காய் எண்ணையுடன் கலந்து அடி வயிற்றில் பூசவேண்டும்.

Constipation!!!

Constipation refers to infrequent or hard stools, or difficulty passing stools. Constipation may involve pain during the passage of a bowel movement, inability to pass a bowel movement after straining or pushing for more than 10 minutes, or no bowel after more than 3 days.

Constipation is a relative term. Normal patterns of bowel and you may not have bowel movements every day. While some healthy people have consistently soft or near runny stools, other have consistently firm stools, but no difficulty passing them.

Sign and symptoms of constipation

• Hard, dry, or lumpy stools
• Fewer than three bowel movements a week
• Having a strain to have bowel movements
• Pain or bleeding with bowel movements
• Feeling bloated or sluggish
• Feeling like you still need to go after having bowel movements

Diagnosis in case of constipation

• Barium enema- to exclude obstruction if constipation of recent origin
• Water soluble contrast media – if megarectum or megacolon is suspected
• Anorectal physiological studies – to elicit Anorectal inhibitory reflux and to assess pelvic floor coordination
• Upper gut barium studies – to exclude pseudo obstruction if lower bowel is dialated
• Upper gut transient studies – if patient has upper gut symptoms or surgery for constipation is contemplated.
• Proctography- if a large retrocele is suspected.

Prevention of constipation

• Increased fluid intake – drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day
• Fiber rich diet – adding fiber rich diet with foods such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, shredded wheat, rolled oats etc.
• Exercise – the patient should incorporate moderate exercise, such as walking, and other exercises to his daily exercise.
• Avoid fat – moderate the consumption of fat-containing foods, such as bacon, butter, cream, and oil. Although these foods will help to soften intestinal contents, they sometimes causes diarrhea.
• Laxatives – take laxative but avoid over use.
• Enema – enema should be taken in case of obstinate constipation but avoid excessive use of enema.

 Agaricus – obstinate constipation following diarrhea in old spirit drinkers; anorexia; painful straining in the rectum before stool.

Aethusa - most obstinate constipation, with feeling as if all action of the bowels had been lost; intolerance of milk; pain with soreness in hypochondria

Alumen – stool knotty and hard; evacuation with great difficulty; cramps frequent in pit of stomach; long lasting pain in rectum after stool

Alumina – inability to pass stool with absence of desire; nausea and faintness; rectum inactive; even a soft stool, like putty, and sticking to anus, requires great straining.

Bryonia alba – constipation due to difficult secretion of mucus membrane there is no moisture about the parts and no mucus soften the hard stools; stool hard, dry as if burnt; stool are expelled with difficulty; obstinate headache with constipation. Complaints are associated with excessive thirst and white coated tongue.

Aloe socotrina – constipation precedes diarrhea; hard lumps mingled with jelly like mucus; constant desire to pass stool but only a little wind passes; great fullness sensation; marble like nodules may escape unconsciously.

Antim crude – diarrhea alternate with constipation; specially in old people; stool is too hard; constipation associated with much flatus and abdominal pain; constipation during child bed; nausea and vomiting; loss of appetite; tongue white coated.

Asafoitida – obstinate constipation; associated with abdominal pain and haemorrhoidal cramps; constant desire to pass stool; with pressing sensation towards the rectum and offensive discharge.

Belladonna – no urging; pain in abdomen along with spasm; suppression of stools with distension of abdomen; coated tongue; eructations; taste sour.

Baptesia – constipation with torper of the liver; great difficulty to pass; resembles sheep’s dung.

Calcaria carb – no urge to pass stool; looking like lumps of chalk in children during the period of dentition; feeling of faintness after stool

China – constipation with vertigo; no urging; larger accumulation of faeces, especially after continued purging, with difficulty to pass them; inactivity of rectum

Collinsonia- constipation during pregnancy; great pelvic congestion; associated with uterine disorder; congestive inertia of bowels; pressure and weight in the rectum; stool hard and sluggish; accompanied with pain; sensation as if sand in the rectum

Graphites – atonic dyspepsia and constipation;  dryness of mucus membrane of rectum; stool knotty, the flattened lumps covered with mucus and united with mucus threads; sensation in the rectum as if much remained after stool; rectal prolapse; soreness and tearing in the rectum after stool.

Ignatia – constipation in consequences of cold, or from carriage, from riding in a carriage; great desire to pass stool; constriction in the anus after stool

Kali carb – stool insufficient; bowels inactive; large sized feces; feels distressed an hour or two before stool.

Lycopodium – digestion impaired; hard stools; passed with difficulty; much loud flatus; pain in abdomen from left to right; tension with itching in anus in the evening; aggravation 4 to 8 pm.; abdominal plethora with constipation in old people of the higher classes; who are suffering from retarded defecation.

Natrum Mur – constipation from inactivity of rectum; obstinate constipation; with much perspiration

Nux Vomica – stool hard and difficult; frequent urging to pass stool with no evacuation; sensation as if much feces remained after passing stool; constipation alternate with diarrhea.

Opium – opium is one of the best medicines of constipation; long standing cases of constipation; no desire for stool; inactive rectum; dryness of mucus membrane; spasmodic retention of feces; heaviness sensation of abdomen; constipation from fright and fear; from chronic lead poisoning.

Platina – excellent remedy for constipation while travelling.

Plumbum met – stools like sheep’s dung; black balls; small and hard stool; evacuation obstructed; stools consisting of small; great tenesmus in rectum.

Podophyllum – remedy for constipation of children after a spell of diarrhea.

Sepia – constipation of females; inability to expel feces or to strain stool; constipation during pregnancy; prolapse rectum; constant fullness, as if weight in rectum; difficult, a little of mucous-covered feces is discharged off and on but gives no satisfaction.

Silicea – stool of large, hard lumps, which remain long in rectum; stool hard has to remove mechanically; even a soft stool expelled with much difficulty; constipation of women before and during menses.
